![]() ![]() But there were also a number that stood out, a series of wonderfully wry extracts from Plica-Chan a manga series that first appeared in the 1990s in the lesbian fanzine Anise the restless, atmospheric Night Footsteps in which an isolated woman looks back at a revelatory past relationship and Uehara Chigusa’s touching story of first love. There are entries that have a slightly bizarre, didactic quality, particularly Shichi Hakku’s speculative fiction centred on robots and patriarchy. ![]() Some stories have a slightly dated feel, for instance “Monalisa Night” which compares and contrasts bar culture in New York and Tokyo - although it’s still a fascinating glimpse of a lesbian community in a specific time and place - and Togarashi’s “Lover” an awkward exploration of sexual frustration. It features a detailed historical overview and a more general introduction on contexts and concepts informing the editor’s choices – originally published in 2008 I’d love to read updated versions of these essays. Ranging across genres from poetry to manga to short stories, this collection focuses on shifting representations of lesbian culture and identity in Japanese fiction. ![]()

The movie speaks of oil's savage, entrepreneurial pre-history in one haunted man, it shows our dysfunctional relationship with capital and natural resources, and even hints at a grim future in which our addiction to oil can no longer be fed. I can only describe it as an epic portrait, running from the beginning of the 20th century to the great crash of 1929. With its lowering, psychotic atmosphere and its Bunyanesque surnames, There Will Be Blood is so potent and so strange that it almost seems to have been delivered here from another planet. ![]() ![]() ![]() Writing the third volume took as many years as had the first two combined. Foote set out to write the trilogy's first volume, Fort Sumter to Perryville. Foote soon realized that the project would require much more time and energy, and therefore offered to write a comprehensive narrative history of the war. On the strength of his novel Shiloh, Random House asked Foote for a short Civil War history. ![]() The individual volumes include Fort Sumter to Perryville (1958), Fredericksburg to Meridian (1963), and Red River to Appomattox (1974). While it touches on political and social themes, the main thrust of the work is military history. Although previously known as a novelist, Foote is most famous for this non-fictional narrative history. Douglas![]() ![]() That said, if you like gore with your horror and can handle some comically cringe-worthy moments involving the writing of women/romance, you might enjoy this one. If anyone wants an example of how to NOT write women and romance, this is a good one. Despite being published in the late 70s, the book reads as if it takes place in the 40s or 50s, and I can only imagine that the author wanted to use science from later decades or would have been better off placing it earlier. That said.the book has quite a few issues, not least of all the way women are written. It's got a lot of fantastically interesting info about bugs, incredibly creepy scenes, and the sort of extended passages of gore that make one understand why it was picked out for the republished "Paperbacks of Hell" series. ![]() The science and the way Douglas writes insects are (or should be) the primary reason for picking this book up. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Victory's price![]() ![]() ![]() Shadow Wing is no longer wounded prey fleeing the hunters of the New Republic. ![]() Operation Cinder, the terrifying protocol of planetary extermination that began in the twilight of the Imperial era, burns throughout the galaxy. Theranos-not to be confused with Thanatos, the god of death, or Thanos, the purple Marvel villain-raised money on a too-good-to-be-true promise of a pitch deck: a revolutionary household box that could administer a number of medical tests-all with a single prick.
